News analysis template: explain the why behind the news

Analysis answers the reader’s question: why is this happening, and what does it mean? Byline structures the causes, the evidence, the expert views and the open questions.

How it works

Open News Analysis in your workspace and fill in what you know. Rough notes are fine; required fields are marked.

You giveExample
News event / peg Local currency hits a record low against the US dollar
Core question to answer Why is the currency falling and what does it mean for ordinary families?
Background / history Devalued 3 times since 2020, forex reserves at 1.3 months of imports, IMF programme suspended
Key factors / causes Trade deficit, import-dependent economy, election spending, fuel subsidy removal
Expert / analyst perspectives (optional) Economist says structural, IMF wants reforms, civil society blames governance
What it means / implications Import prices rising 40%, school fees up, businesses struggling, debt burden increasing
What remains uncertain (optional) Whether IMF programme will resume, how long depreciation continues
Target length (words) (optional) 500, 700, 900, 1200

Press Write and the draft appears as it is written. Edit it, then save it, translate it, turn it into a script or social posts, or send it to your editor.

Tips

  • Phrase the central question the way a reader would ask it.
  • Include what is still unknown: it builds trust.

Accuracy first

Byline writes only from the facts you give it. It never invents quotes, sources or figures, and when something important is missing it marks the gap, like [CHECK: name of the spokesperson], for you to fill. You check every fact before publishing.
