Quote cleaner: tidy direct quotes without changing their meaning
Paste a raw quote from a transcript. Byline gives a cleaned direct quote, a paraphrase and the best short partial quote, and warns you when a quote cannot be cleaned without changing its meaning.
How it works
Open Quote Cleaner in your workspace and fill in what you know. Rough notes are fine; required fields are marked.
| You give | Example |
|---|---|
| Raw quote (as recorded or transcribed) | "Um, so basically what we are trying to, you know, achieve here is uh, making sure that the, the health system is, like, working for everyone..." |
| Speaker name and title (optional) | The health minister |
| Context (optional) (optional) | Press conference on hospital drug shortages |
Press Write and the result appears as it is written.
Ethics
- Only filler words and false starts are removed; nothing is added.
- If in doubt, use the indirect version.
Accuracy first
Byline writes only from the facts you give it. It never invents quotes, sources or figures, and when something important is missing it marks the gap, like [CHECK: name of the spokesperson], for you to fill. You check every fact before publishing.
